Reprint and supplement the Heritage Homeowner's Preservation Manual in Hoi An World Heritage Site

The Homeowner's Manuals have been developed within the framework of the "Integrated Community Development and Cultural Heritage Site Preservation in Asia and the Pacific through Local Effort" programme (LEAP), which strengthens local community involvement in heritage conservation.
The manuals aim to build local capacity in heritage preservation by training homeowners to maintain their historic properties using appropriate conservation approaches. The manuals present a synthesis of traditional building techniques and modern conservation science. They codify time- tested methods adapted to each type of structure using indigenous building materials and techniques. The manuals have been developed in conjunction with local heritage managers and national conservation experts, who will also be involved in training local stakeholders.
The Heritage Homeowner's Preservation Manual in Hoi An World Heritage Site was compiled and published for the first time in 2008. Hoi An Center for Monument Management and Preservation (Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation now) in conjunction with the Institute of International Culture, Showa Women's University (Japan) the UNESCO Office in Hanoi had made this practical manual. This manual is an important resource to help homeowners to enhance understanding of heritage value, and the best ways of maintaining, repairing, and restoring their houses; it also provides local authorities with strategic planning and policies on managing, preserving and promotion Hoi An cultural heritage.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of UNESCO's recognition of Hoi An as a World Cultural Heritage site (on December 4th, 1999-2024), the Hoi An Homeowner's Manual has been developed and reissued through joint efforts of the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation and UNESCO Office in Hanoi (Vietnam), with updated information related to the management work of Hoi An World Heritage site. This Manual comprises not only the latest information on management and preservation methods and policies but also many pratical case studies over past years. We hope the Manual will help researchers, professionals and homeowners to raise awareness of the importance of heritage preservation, of their responsibility as key stakeholders for preserving valuable cultural values for future generations.
