Publishing Book “Architectural Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town”

Hoi An Ancient Town is a special phenomenon in the history of the urban development in Vietnam and Asia – where values of architecture, urban planning and culture are interwoven.
Forming and then constantly developing in over two millennia, Hoi An was a famous international trading port, where commercial activities and cultural exchanges had taken place in a bustling way, especially in the period from the 17th century to the 19th century, by traders from countries of East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe. These deep interactions have left significant marks in terms of architecture and urban structure in Hoi An Ancient town.
Architectural space of Hoi An Ancient Town is a heritage complex which is well preserved over time. The complex included shophouses, family chapels, communal houses, assembly halls, pagodas, churches, bridges, wells, markets, temples,… which were distributed along narrow streets to match local climate, geography and indigenous social structure. The architecture here reflects the harmonious blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European styles, creating a unique and integrated urban complex. Notably, a majority of monuments which was built from the 17th to 19th centuries are still preserved almost original. The preservation helps ensure the heritage’s authenticity and convey valuable messages of its history and culture.
Aimed at helping to synthesize and introduce the architectural heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town through images, Center for the Conservation of Hoi An World Cultural Heritage publishes Book “Architectural Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town”. The book includes many topics related to monuments’ history, decorative patterns and other elements contributing to urban forming process of the ancient town.
The Center hopes the book may help raise public awareness of heritage preservation and promote architectural values of Hoi An Town to friends at home and abroad. The book is expected to be released on the occasion of the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23, 2025).
