Hoi An Ancient Town – UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just famous for its complex of architectural monuments like ancient houses, temples, pagodas, assembly halls, etc. It even contains a system of valuable documentary heritage.

As part of this heritage, stone steles are a significantly important source of documentary reflecting cultural and human history, and having typical values in the development of Hoi An town. Carved patterns and calligraphy on the steles embodies artistic imprint, aesthetic thought and cultural continuity through historical periods of Hoi An, contributing to the treasure of Vietnamese cultural heritage.

On the occasion of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day and the 26th anniversary of UNESCO recognition of Hoi An Ancient Town (December 4, 1999 – 2025), Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center has held an exhibition of documentary heritage through stone stele records themed “Touch of the Time”. The exhibition has taken place at Hoi An Communal House (No.27 Le Loi street, Hoi An ward, Da Nang city) from November 23 to December 5, 2025.Some of stone stele records displayed - Photo: Phuoc Tinh
The exhibition has 30 panels of information and images of typical stone steles with special historical, cultural and artistic values in Hoi An Ancient Town. It is certainly a valuable source of knowledge and inspiration for researchers and those who is interested in this unique forms of heritage. Archives of Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center and Institute of Sino-Nom studies provided documentary for the exhibition.
